Caffeine is one of the most addictive substances out there and quitting coffee for good comes with a whole list of painful and annoying symptoms. Luckily, most cases of caffeine withdrawal last no longer than about a week and can be overcome with a little willpower and some natural cures. Let’s have a closer look!
Symptoms and cures of caffeine withdrawal
Caffeine withdrawal symptoms are very easy to spot and will normally subside within about 3 to 7 days (the exact length is normally determined by how heavy of a coffee drinker you are). Here are some of them:
- Headache is the most common symptom of caffeine withdrawal. It can start as quickly as 2-3 hours after missing your regular dose of caffeine.
- Extreme fatigue and sleepiness. Always remember that this is not normal exhaustion and having a cup of coffee won’t cure it – give it a few days and you’ll have more energy than ever before!
- Extreme irritability. Be aware of this and do not take it out on others.
- Total lack of motivation and lethargy. This is also temporary.
- Insomnia is another common symptom that goes away with time.
Alright so all of this sounds pretty bad – how should you deal with caffeine withdrawal?
- First off try slowly reducing you daily caffeine intake. If you are used to drinking three cups of coffee a day, cut it down to just one cup a day for a week and then down to one cut every other day, etc.
- Supplements rich in both calcium and magnesium work great for reducing many caffeine withdrawal symptoms. Take these for a week or two during the detox period.
- Another way to alleviate caffeine withdrawal symptoms is to take a long walk in fresh air. This works surprisingly good and can ward off caffeine headaches for hours.
